Movie Review: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

“Walk Hard” is a hilarious satire of the fame associated with the music industry. Written by Jud Aptow, you have to know there will be ironic wit and silliness happening. This movie is not as realistic in its relationships as other Aptow movies so keep this in mind and enjoy the broader style of humor in this film. This is a silly comedy that is really written smartly.

John C. Reilly is channeling the aura of Johnny Cash and a number of other famous musicians in his character. He helped to write a number of the songs for the soundtrack as did Aptow. Make sure you listen to the words of the songs especially the Dylan take off. Is there anything John C. Reilly can’t do? He is excellent in drama, comedy, musicals, the guy can really sing (I’m a trained singer so high praise from me on this) and seems to work all the time. He moves through the movie with command of the screen in a wonderful lead performance.

The supporting cast is strong, including SNL alums Chris Parnell, Tim Meadows and Kristen Wiig. Meadows line delivery in the various drug scenes is deadpan and hilarious. Jenna Fischer of “The Office” is Dewey’s second wife, playing the part in over the edge perfection in some of the funniest scenes of the film. One quick personal note, the Nightclub Manager’s role is played by Paul Bates. We were both in Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria back in the late 70′s and did some scene work together at school. Its great to see him in the film performing as well as ever.

The soundtrack contains well written music with biting comedy lyrics. There is a long list of guest appearances in the movie that add to the fun of the film. The over the top perfection costuming and sets really give the feel for musical generations through the sixties, seventies and beyond. Solid direction, hilarious performances and a great script make this movie a classic comedy.

2007. Director Jake Kasdan. Written by Jud Aptow and Jake Kasdan. Starring John C. Reilly, Jenna Fischer, Chris Parnell, Tim Meadows, Kristen Wiig.
