Movie Review: Awakenings
“Awakenings” is one of my favorite films. The screenplay is based on a book by Dr. Oliver Sacks. Williams and De Niro as always are brilliant, they are two of my favorite movie actors. Dr. Malcom Sayer is played by Robin Williams in an understated performance. The story focuses on Dr. Sayers work with patients who have been catatonic from an encephalitis epidemic years ago. One of the patients of particular interest to the doctor is Leonard, played by Robert De Niro. Dr. Sayer tends to be more comfortable with plants than people, so the comatose patients suit him fine. The doctor introduces a new medicine that is able to awaken the patients from their comatose state. Leonard, having been in a coma since he was a teenager, must adapt to his new life as an adult. The process of the comatose patients awakening is at once hopeful and wrenching to watch.
William’s portrayal mirrors that of the real Dr. Sacks quiet personality. This is an oscar worthy performance for Williams as well as De Niro’s performance, with strong acting from the ensemble. Fine direction, a moving story and excellent acting combine for a fascinating, touching and memorable movie experience.
