Movie Review: Away From Her

“Away From Her” is the delicate story of a couple dealing with the devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. The selfless choices made by wife and husband in this film are touching and sad at the same time. The ravages of the disease are followed throughout the film. The most frightening aspect of the disease is shown from the early stages when a person is aware there is something wrong. This is a fascinating character study performed by seasoned lead and supporting actors.

Julie Christie was nominated for her role as the wife living with Alzheimer’s disease and a well deserved nomination it was. Gordon Pinsent should also have been nominated. It was clear that their relationship as actors was key to the level of performances they reached in the movie.

Beautifully filmed with excellent direction, screenplay and acting makes this deeply moving film an instant classic.

2006. Written and directed by Sarah Polley. Starring  Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent, Olympia Dukakis and Michael Murphy.
