Movie Review: Baby Mama

“Baby Mama” was a fun movie with modern day characters. Its not the typical slapstick comedy or a super smart dialogue movie like Tina Fey would write but it is a charming and amusing film with some laugh out loud moments. The relationship between long time real life friends Amy Poehler and Tina Fey works perfectly here, they have a great connection as friends and it shows. The movie was written and directed by a past SNL writer who worked with Tina Fey, Michael McCullers. The movie follows the storyline of Kate, a high level career woman with her biological clock ticking. Amy Poehler’s Angie is the “baby mama” surrogate who turns Kate’s world upside down. There are many twists to the plot and plenty of silly stuff ensues. Greg Kinnear is as usual perfectly cast as the likeable everyman character Rob, an engaging nice guy who meets and falls in love with Kate. The other bright spot in the movie is Steve Martin’s character Barry, the odd, new age, obscenely wealthy boss of Kate. Steve Martin is hilarious in each scene he is in playing the character very straight with completely absurd motivation and dialogue.

With a great lead cast and solid supporting cast this is more interesting than your typical comedy buddy film or slapstick comedy of the month. Its an excellent film to watch with a good friend.

2008. Written and directed by Michael McCullers. Starring Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Greg Kinnear, Sigourney Weaver and Steve Martin.
