Movie Review: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

“Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” is a sci-fi musical comic with great music and unexpected twists. Dr. Horrible’s vision is to become a supervillain crushing his nemesis Captain Hammer, who is more interested in his own reflection than hero accomplishments. In reality Dr. Horrible is a shy computer nerd with a video blog who is in love with Penny, the homeless advocate he meets at his laundromat. Dr. Horrible attempts to gain entry to the Evil League with his deeds but runs into obstacles created by Penny and Captain Hammer.

The original film was introduced for free on the Dr. Horrible website, hosted on Hulu as individual episodes over a few days time. This short independent film is aimed at the current generation of online viewers created in a medium they understand. I imagine over time “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” will achieve cult status for its imaginative script and soundtrack. The film won’t be for everyone but then again this was also the case for “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, now a cult classic.

The direction is well done with a strong screenplay and great performances by Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. What stands out most to me is the excellence of the musical numbers which are memorable. Neil Patrick Harris and and Felicia Day have wonderful singing voices that fit perfectly with the songs of the soundtrack. If you like quirky, funny independent films with their own style you just might enjoy “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”.

2008. Directed by Joss Whedon, written by Joss Whedon, Zack Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, Felicia Day and Simon Helberg.
