Having been a fan of the original Star Trek and Star Trek Next Generation I enjoyed this new version of the series. The screenplay follows the Star Trek crew in their early years, updating the feel of the movie with excellent special effects and a young cast while paying tribute to the original concept of the series.

The screenplay and direction may be the real star of this movie, Star Trek is well-written with clever lines and fast paced action, all fitting together for a great storyline. J.J. Abrams makes the most of this film, from casting to art direction, cinematography and story.

The cast is uniformly good overall with standout performances by Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty and original Spock Leonard Nimoy. I was particularly impressed with Simon Pegg, whose Scotty comes in later in the film yet makes every line and scene he is in memorable. As for Nimoy, he was always one of the best things about the original Star Trek series and continues the tradition here.

The quality of the film is high and makes this a great space adventure whether you are a Trekkie or new to Star Trek. This is a film you should add to your must see list.

2009. Directed by J.J. Abrams. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban and Bruce Greenwood.

Rating: ★★★★½
