Movie Review: Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

16-year-old Claireece “Precious” Jones is an overweight, illiterate teenager pregnant with her second child. Precious lives in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem, where she faces harassment from other students because she is overweight, makes adjustment as she changes to an alternative school, and lives in a horrific home environment with her abusive mother.

As good as Mo’Nique was in her role, I have to say I was equally impressed with first time actress Gabourey Sidibe and Paula Patton. For someone who has never acted before or taken acting lessons, Sidibe was outstanding in this role, she has natural raw acting talent. Patton was perfect as Precious’ teacher and mentor, Ms. Rain. The levels the actresses have to reach down to emotionally in their roles is admirable. Precious is an excellent film, beautifully directed and as painful as it is to watch, inspirational as well. If you haven’t seen it yet, Precious is a film you won’t want to miss.

2009. Directed by Lee Daniels. Starring Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd and Lenny Kravitz.
