Movie Review: Dirty Filthy Love
Mark Furness watches as his life falls apart around him. Mark’s marriage to his wife Stevie is ending, his depression from the separation is affecting his architect job, and he finds it difficult to function from day to day. Mark faces immense challenges as he discovers he has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Tourette’s Syndrome. When Mark works at saving his marriage at all cost, his life spirals out of control.
This made for TV film is riveting, with an astonishing performance by Michael Sheen (The Queen) who embodies this character body and soul. Compare Sheen’s performance as Tony Blair to Mark Furness and you will see an amazing acting range. Sheen gives up an in depth look at a man struggling, acted with no sentiment and no apologies. Shirley Henderson is excellent as friend Obsessive Compulsive Disorder who is attracted to Mark.
The screenplay is excellent, written by Jeff Pope and Ian Puleston-Davies, an actor who himself suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Although the trailer deems this film a comedy, I would classify it as a drama with comic moments. The cast is uniformly strong, with Sheen’s powerful performance and the compelling storyline more than enough reason to put this film on your must see list.
2004. Directed by Adrian Shergold. Starring Michael Sheen, Adrian Bower, Claudie Blakley, Anastasia Griffith, and Shirley Henderson.
