Movie Review: Winter’s Bone

A teenager in the Ozarks takes on adult responsibilities as her sick mother and missing father leave her in charge of caring for her younger siblings. When Ree Dolly discovers her father put up their house as collateral for bail she must find her drug dealing father before his trial begins or lose their house. Ree seeks out dangerous meth dealers to find the truth about what happened to her father before the court takes over their property.

Winter’s Bone is an excellent drama with strong performances, particularly by Jennifer Lawrence as Ree Dolly, who earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination for her excellent performance. John Hawkes as Ree’s uncle, Teardrop, is riveting in his role, and earned a well-deserved Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. The atmosphere of Winter’s Bone is dark and depressing, representing the poverty of the Ozarks. The cinematography and real life settings of the Ozarks becomes another character in the film.

This is a wrenching film that can be difficult to watch, but well worth viewing, a film you will want to put on your must see list.

2010. Directed by Debra Granik. Starring Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Garret Dillahunt, Lauren Sweetser, and Shelley Waggener.
