Movie Review: Silent Hill

Silent Hill is one of those movies where you either love it or you hate it. It is based off of the popular video game with the same title. Those who tend to love it are, of course, the crowd that are fans of the game. Other people who like the movie are those that enjoy a good psychological thriller with a little bit of horror mixed in. Those who tend to hate it are those who like the typical slasher movie, and most people who have no idea what the movie is about going into it.

This movie is about a mother, Rose (Radha Mitchell), and her daughter Sharon. Sharon is having dreams about a place called Silent Hill. These dreams get more and more intense and are causing Sharon to sleep walk. Fearing for her daughter’s safety, Rose decides that by taking her daughter to this place that it will help stop Sharon from having the dreams and sleep walking. On the way, Rose and her daughter run into a cop that just won’t let them be, and the scene turns into a chase. Rose, while speeding and trying to get away from the cop, crashes and blacks out. When Rose wakes up she realizes she is in a strange place that is raining ash. She soon realizes she can’t find her daughter. The journey to find her daughter and to find out where she is begins here.

Silent Hill is an incredible movie. I consider it a horror movie, but in all actuality it really is not. The reason I call it a horror movie is because it really sticks with you for a long time. You will find yourself thinking about several scenes of the movie for months after you watch it. Many scenes in the movie will cause you to think hard about the deep dark details of the story. This movie is not for those that do not enjoy great twists, a complex story, intense thought, have heart conditions, easily get sick from movies and those easily frightened. This movie requires mature thought, patience and an open mind. If you have all these traits, you will definitely want to watch this movie several times to get the most out of it!

2006. Directed by Christophe Gans. Starring Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden and Sean Bean.
