This dark, futuristic sci-fi thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat. The movie has an interesting plot with the original story adapted by the director from a novel by the same name, then adding to the original storyline. The plot centers around a world in the future that is at war with one another due to its inability to produce children. “Children Of Men” is a violent film with a great many war scenes but the story itself centers on people, not the politics, as the solution to war.
The lead actors and supporting actors are well cast in this film. Clive Owen as Theo gives a multi-layered performance here. It is good to see Owen cast beyond the typical leading man role and it is one of his best performances to date. Michael Caine as Theo’s friend Jasper is a highlight of the film, a fascinating character and one you won’t normally see Caine cast in. Julianne Moore is in the movie briefly as Jules, too briefly unfortunately since she’s such a fine actress. Danny Huston has a small part as Theo’s cousin Nigel; again, I wish I’d seen more of him since he is a talented actor. Pam Ferris gives a great supporting performance as Miriam and Clare-Hope Ashitey is effective and moving as Kee, the young woman who bears a child in a childless world.
The special effects, art direction, cinematography and overall feel of the movie is impressive. The story holds up to the action in the film which is rare. I would prefer that the relationships have been expanded in the screenplay but all in all the relationships that are in place are what help tie this movie together. This is not a storyline you’ve seen before on film which should give you enough incentive to add it to your DVD rental list.
