Movie Review: Enchanted

“Enchanted” is an enchanting movie with Disney at its best combining music, live action and animation. Gisele is transported to modern day New York by the evil Queen Narissa to search for her prince. The story follows the fairy tale Gisele facing reality in modern times and is ably narrated by Julie Andrews. This is a musical fairy tale with grown up moments and plenty of Disney charm.

The screenplay is tongue-in-cheek and works well with the concept of the story. There is some of the clever style of “Princess Bride” in the screenplay which is a plus and the usual cast of overly cute animated chararacters from Disney. Amy Adams is perfectly cast as Gisele and carries the film, her acting and singing reach a believability that most other actors would not reach in this role. Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall, Idina Menzel, Rachel Covey and Susan Sarandon are all excellent and add to the strength of the film.

The complexity of direction, camera work, costumes, musical numbers and special effects needed for this film are admirable. With great music, good acting and clever script this is a movie for young and old alike.

2007. Directed by Kevin Lima. Starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, Timothy Spall, Idina Menzel, Rachel Covey and Susan Sarandon.
