Aspiring writer Julie Powell is inspired by Julia Child and decides at age 30 to write an online journal following her recreation of Julia Child’s recipes from Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, 524 recipes in 365 days. Ephron’s screenplay seamlessly moves between Powell’s and Child’s lives, intertwining them perfectly. The Julie Powell character is real and the movie is based on her online journal. Streep stated in extras from the movie that she played Julie Powell’s perception of Julia Child, not an exact impersonation of Child. Certainly Streep captures the essence of Julia Child, she aptly embodies her energy. Streep is nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance and well she should be. The level of skill in the excellent performances of Streep, Adams and Tucci is pitch perfect, with a great performance by Chris Messina as Julie’s under appreciated husband.

Julie & Julia is the kind of film you want to see again and again for the sterling performances, excellent direction and endearing story. The movie captures the time periods and tranlates the creation of Julia Child’s recipes beautifully. Most reviews of the movie suggest you eat before watching this film. Better yet, make a Julia Child recipe and enjoy while watching. Be sure to place this film on your must see movie list.
