If you are looking for a perennial Christmas movie that guarantees laughs, “Elf” is the answer. Ferrell is the perfect man boy, much like Tom Hanks in “Big” or Robin Williams in “Hook”. Ferrell plays Buddy who is found abandoned as a baby by Santa’s head elf, played with deadpan charm by Bob Newhart. Buddy is raised by the elves and finds out he was adopted, embarking on a mission to find his biological parents. Watching Buddy’s first reactions to Manhattan, sugar, mall Santas and first love is hilarious and appealing.
The site gags alone are worth renting this Will Ferrell film. There is not much else to say except imagining how funny the 6 foot 3 Ferrell is in full green elf costume and tights, screaming “Santa’s here” at high pitch or doing a full body jump onto a huge Christmas tree. Favreau’s direction of “Elf” finds the right physical comedy and sweetness to balance this holiday film. Showcasing an excellent screenplay and sterling comedy cast, “Elf” is a great family movie and a perfect choice for your holiday film list.

2003. Directed by Jon Favreau. Starring Will Ferrell, James Caan, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, Andy Richter and Zooey Deschanel.
